The map aims to highlight various museums and their locations, providing valuable spatial information for residents and visitors. Additionally, the project integrates stretch goals to encourage learners to explore advanced map design techniques and further enhance the map's visual appeal and usability.
Data Acquisition:
The dataset utilized in this project was acquired from the project packages offered for the "Make a Map" exercise within the Cartography MOOC. These project packages, serving as a desktop application template, were meticulously crafted by EsriTrainingSvc and were most recently updated on April 24, 2020.
Geoprocessing and Visualization:
Generalization: Streamlined the museum dataset to focus on Boston museums, simplifying complex features and reducing unnecessary detail for clarity.
Masking: Highlighted the boundaries of Boston within Massachusetts, emphasizing the city's location and providing spatial context.
Projection Selection: Chose an appropriate map projection to accurately represent spatial relationships between museum locations, minimizing distortions for improved accuracy.
Label Classification: Prioritized legibility and placement of museum names based on their spatial distribution and significance, optimizing readability and visual hierarchy.
Visualization: Designed the layout and symbology of the map to effectively communicate the distribution and characteristics of museums in Boston.
Documentation: Recorded all geoprocessing tasks performed, including before-and-after visualizations to demonstrate data refinement and map design decisions.
