Flood Simulation

Project Overview:
The aim of this project is to simulate potential flood scenarios in my neighborhood in Denver, specifically between 78th Ave and 88th Ave, west of I-25. This simulation highlights the flood risks associated with heavy rainfall and provides valuable insights into the area's flood dynamics. By leveraging geospatial analysis and GIS tools, I have created a comprehensive visualization of flood impacts, impervious surfaces, and stormwater management infrastructure.
Geoprocessing and Visualization:
Clipping Rasters and Lines: To focus on the area of interest, I clipped both raster and vector datasets. This involved selecting the region between 78th Ave and 88th Ave and using it as a boundary to trim larger datasets. This step ensured that all subsequent analysis was specific to the target area.
Setting a Mask for OSM Buildings: Using OpenStreetMap (OSM) data, I set a mask to isolate and display only the relevant buildings within the defined area. This allowed for a clear visualization of structures that could be affected by flooding.
Digitizing Canals: I manually digitized the agricultural canals that handle stormwater in the neighborhood. This involved tracing the canals' paths using satellite imagery and available maps to create accurate vector representations.
Collecting Elevation and Impervious Surface Data: To model the flood simulation accurately, I collected data on elevation and impervious surfaces. Elevation data was used to understand the topography and flow directions, while impervious surface data helped identify areas that contribute to runoff due to their inability to absorb water.Â
Skills Demonstrated:
Data Collection
Data Digitization
Spatial analysis
Data visualization
Conclusion:
This flood simulation project provides a detailed analysis of potential flood impacts in my Denver neighborhood. By integrating various geospatial datasets and employing advanced GIS techniques, I have created a valuable resource for understanding and mitigating flood risks. As I continue to refine this project, including mapping storm drain locations and agricultural canals, I aim to enhance our community's resilience to flooding. Your feedback and any data sources you can share would be greatly appreciated.
